UL 2272 - Standard for your Safety

In the USA have been more than 52 reported cases of fires with a damage of more than $2 million till end of 2015, caused by cheap built in components, and also in Germany and Europe such cases started to occur. We as IO HAWK welcome and support the safety standards of UL, because at present stage only UL certified self-balancing scooters are really safe.

International respected safety testing
Underwriters Laboratories, short 'UL', is an independent organization that tests products, components, materials and whole systems for certain aspects of safety - by doing so, UL does not "approve" the sales of the products, but offers manufacturers to achieve their highly respected UL-safety certificate. In February 2016 UL announced the development of a standard testing method for hoverboards, the "UL 2272 - Battery Systems for use in self balancing scooters".

Important - not to mix up: single components of hoverboards can already today wear a UL seal, e.g. for standards for lithium batteries, but this seal is only valid for the component as such, not for the whole hoverboard tested as a whole system. The UL2272 certification is a test of the whole system, with all built in components. The tested system is certified as safe, when all components work perfectly together and ensure safety.

To achieve the UL2272 certification the whole system will be tested.

All hoverboards have to pass a FMEA test - FAILURE MODE EFFECTS ANALYSIS - Here some previous UL Standards are being used as well: UL991, UL1998, UL60730-1, IEC61508

To put it briefly: A hoverboard with UL 2272 Certification has passed extensive tests for any single component, as well as all components running as one whole system. We are happy that there finally is a standard that we as IO HAWK welcome and support, because there is still one valid fact: There is worldwide no known case of a burning original IO HAWK (recognizable with the "IO" on the rims)

A few Shocking Images

Burning Hoverboards caused by cheap manufactured components. So far, wordlwide is no case of a burning IO Hawk known - only IO HAWK does have the "IO" in the middle of the rims

The IO Hawk is trend and safety standards are finally defined, so the end user can easily check it now.
Sascha ArndtGeneral Manager
For us, the safety for all customers are the highest priority before the profit of the company. A Hoverboard which cost around 200 euros is impossible to buy without of expense to the safety of users. The recent accidents were inevitable and we already warned about it in June 2015. For this reason we have the safety standard of UL.
